Not a country.. but the place I have felt most unsafe is
Nairobi, Kenya.. not a nice city @ all, definately didn't like being out after dark. 4 out of 9 people on our tour which started here were robbed in some form!

Of all the cities that I've ever spent time in, Nairobi is my least favorite, and I also didn't feel safe there (but that's probably because it's not safe there). More than once I was followed by gangs , but it was daylight, and I would go into some public building.

What happened to the 4 people? Were they mugged while out and about? What was stolen?

1 had her backpack slashed while walking down the street & stuff pulled out, 1 daypack stolen & 2 girls actually had necklaces ripped off their necks:( We then travelled thru Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe & Botswana without any thefts

Wow, That's really terrible! Especially the 3 that had stuff stolen right off there bodies.

Sounds like you saw alot of Africa! Where did you go in Botswana? I was there last year. What safari parks did you visit on this trip? How long was the whole trip?

Yeah it was a great trip. Camping Overland with Kumuka. 9 weeks all up. Masai Mara, Ngorogoro Crater, Hwange, Matapos & Chobe national parks. We saw it all but the Elephants were my Fav :)

WOW, that really sounds Great!!! Were there masses of Elephants when you were at Chobe? I was in Botswana in March and they weren't really around then. So I spent my time there down in the Okavango Delta (the highlight being the Moremi wildlife preserve).

I'd like to visit Chobe and Hwange someday. The safari thing can get kind of addicting, can't it?

Fiona,

Did you get see any Leopards? They seem to be the hardest to actually see. I was in East Africa for a three weeks and never saw one, but on this last trip, to Botswana, I finally got to see them. Saw 5 in all.

Yeah got to see the big 5.. only 1 leopard though, you were extremely lucky to see 5 of them. There were quite a lot of elephants in Chobe, lots of babies.. more in the Mara though,
but the best one was in the Crater, huge bull elephant with one
gigantic tusk & only 1/2 of the other one. Real close too, about
8-10 mtrs from the landrover.

Being kidnapped it is a totally different story
kidnappers kidnap people they know, people they know have lots of money, they would not kidnap tourists!!

All the latinamerican places can be as dangerous as you look for danger, and they can be as touristic as you may want to get them touristic, and mainly if you are looking for the real thing, mix with the people, try and get to know people, most of the time youwill get these fantastic stories and most of the nicest experiences, for these things are what make your trip worth going, if you stick to bars and hot spots it is exactly what you will get and nothing more.

so be cool and try to enjoy!
and for those having come to latin america and left without having seen the real thing dont you think it is about time to take second chances?

My first time to Belize it was hell! i was almost killed, but it took time for me to recover and try again, second time i was even with my kid, (many years later), second time was so wonderful, now i go at least once a year. (and by the way I am dark and latin too..)
