did you have a bad experience in indonesia? i traveled there for six months. nothing terrible happened, but i found myself in many situations with the potential for violence -- for instance, taking a minibus through sumba at night and almost getting robbed by some other passengers. it was hard not to feel paranoid when we were so conspicuous, but i found that knowing indonesian really helped to get people on my side and looking out for me. also, the travel infrastructure is so dilapidated there that i felt i was risking my life every time i stepped ontoa plane or ferry or bus.

Wow I forgot about this thread. That's true traveller100, about 1600 murders each in Colombia and South Africa.

Also numero1, how many Hollywood movies is Colombian violence in?? I think you'll find it's very few and it's certainly not sensationalized like American violence (a far safer country too I may add).

It's also stereotyped (all the violence is by drug cartels and guerillas blah blah) when in fact the vast majority of homicides have always been by street-level drug gangs and highway bandits. This gives the wrong impression that if you avoid the countryside and not get on the wrong side of the mafia then Colombia is perfectly safe. If you stay in a safe part of the cities then you should be okay, yes.

Again though, how often have you seen the murderous streets of Medellin, Cali or Buenaventura in an American magazine??? Compare that to Los Angeles (a far safer city contrary to popular belief).

Also considering you 'live' in Oz it's not surprising you've encountered a drunk. It was hardly a life threatening situation was it? Do you honestly think if you lived in the slums of those Colombian cities I mentioned you'd come up against less?? Look on the net for the murder rates in Medellin and Cali then compare them to Sydney.

yes this is Sydney Australia 2005:

as I said. most of the world is a dangerous place now anyways. Colombia most definitely is as well. But trouble can come to anyone anywhere, you just need to be careful wherever you go.

Apart from the obvious added perils such as war, a high incidence of drug smuggling etc, generally speaking, wherever you are in the world, if you want or look for trouble / danger, you can find it.

The same goes for the more positive aspects of life, of course! :)

Quoting andrea_d

Brazil is horrible, people think that brazil is this great fun free loving place, in reality brazil is a nightmare!!!

sao paulo is latin america's most dangerous city, then caracas venezuela, and rio de janeiro brazil

i will not go back to brazil ever again

however, the whole colombia is dangerous is total crap, i have been in colombia for over six months now, and is by far the best place i have visited in south america, and one of the best places i've been to.....

i wish people did a little investigation of their own about colombia, they should ask people who has been there, and not let the crap the media which obviously hates colombia says.

I am a Swedish girl, and I totally love colombia, and I do not believe, as a matter of fact, i refuse to believe that colombia is the most dangerous place on the planet!!!

Youv'e gotta be kidding right, Brazil is nowhere near as dangerous as Colombia, also considering the fact that Colombia has a much higher murder rate and a much higher kidnapping rate to. Also Brazil is not in a civil war like Colombia is.

Colombia is a hell hole amd i have absoloutly no desire to go there, Brazil on the other hand is a country that i would like to go to despite it being dangerous although it is nowhere near as dangerous as Colombia.
