jameslomas has indicated that this thread is about Peru

I'll be in both Peru and Bolivia around end of September but which place is better to do an amazon trip. Iquitos seems to be further into the Amazon but I've also heard good things about Rurrenanbaque. Really wanting something where I can get boat up the river and stay in the rainforest. and see animals etc. If anyone knows about this that would be great.l

Just booked a flight from Cochabamba to Guayaramerin in the north of Bolivia. We will be trying to book a boat there to go south to Trinidad. This will take 5 days (or more depending on the boat) through the amazon. Don't know much about Iquitos or Rurrenabaque except that Rurren is quit touristy. We are planning to travel from Trinidad to Rurren via San Borja overland and visit PN Madidi.

Don't expect to see too many animals. Probably you see a lot of birds and maybe monkeys but you are in a jungle where it is always difficult to see animals especially mammals.

Maybe I can give you some more advice after we have done this trip. This will be in the first week of July.

Hi - i too am looking to do a trip in to the Amazon and don't know where would be best to go.

I will be in Peru for the 4th December and am looking to head into the Amazon - have read can get on a cargo boat for cheap and hang up a hammock and mosquito net and that is all you need to stay on there and go up the Amazon (Is that too risky? Is is that okay to do?)
Would it be worthwhile going on a tour boat: But we really dont want to do the 'tourist thing' though. Also what is the weather like around Deceber time for Peru?

Is Peru the best place to head into the Amazon, or would we be better going to it from Bolivia?
What options are there? Your advise woudl be greatly appreciated.

I am heading out to Iquitos in about 4 days time. I have heard that Rurren is cool, had mates that have gobne there, but i am currently sitting in the village below macchu picchu with a load of people that have just come from Iquitos. Canoeing, spear fishing, fireflies, monkeys, caotis, wildlife you cannot imagione, and the famous Amazon river??
I cannot wait, and too, the town is supposed to be well cool, good night life, parties, and the prices dont break the bank too.
I would say Iquitos from peoples adventures that I have heard about.

Tarik

I haven't been in any of those places, but my vote goes to Iquitos, it isn't cos it is my country it's because you have the opportunity to sail through The Amazon River!!! and see the pink dolphins!!!...that must be great
