Often people are judged by the company they keep ....

Do you think that people who believe they are incompetent are more likely than others to pursue seemingly rewarding relationships in an attempt to ally themselves with competent people?

I am confused, please put this down to me not being native English speaker.

I thought you would be incompetent or competent in a certain field, could anybody be generally incompetent (no good at anything)?
I don't believe there is any such person, everybody is good at something - I would even go as far as everybody has a unique talent in something, but the person might never find it out.

And how is competence measured, is it the same as being good at something or is it like being assertive? Is it measured by success/achievements?

Okay, then, let me ask you a different question.

What are your friends like?

If you are a follower, you will become like the company you keep...If you are a strong minded individual, you will not become the company you keep. But manage to keep your own identity.
If you want to become more like the company you keep, it is easy! Just make sure they are the kind you want to be like:)

People who believe they are incompetant probably wouldn't have the confidence to align themselves with people they see as competant!
I like to believe that everyone has one thing they are really good at too... however some people you come across you just can't work out what that is
