If it makes you feel any better Ev, I purchased an iPod, digital camera, 256mb memory stick & a pair of Ecco travel sandels on the weekend... my credit card groaned at the $947 too & I haven't purchased a jacket yet The shoe store lady gave me 50 bucks off which helped a little.. I have seen a great jacket in Kathmandu for a mere $379 but am holding off to see if it is included in their Sept sale - please, please, please

Fiona, it seems like I am not the only one that waits around for the Kathmandu sales before goin mad. They are great value though so its worth fighting the crowds

Well, I was sure I was hitting the store at the right time due to the massive red and white SALE signs all over the window, but naturally enough, there was NO SALE on anything that I wanted to buy!

Anyway, once the shop assistant got his claws into me and started giving me the hard sell, I was trapped. I could see the door merely feet away, and when I heard the words "only two hundred and ninety nine euro" floating over the air, I wanted to run screaming from the shop clutching my credit card to my chest, shouting "Back fiend!! back!"

Instead, what did I do?

I said "Is that all? Well, I suppose I need to get one...." and let him prise the card from my fist. In a matter of nano-seconds, he'd swiped the card, bagged the jacket and handed me my receipt and had moved onto the next unsuspecting victim without even a goodbye....:(

I should never be allowed to go shopping on my own.

ANyway, on further inspection last night, I discovered that the fiend in question sold me not a PACLITE garment but an XCR one.
After a bit of googling on the subject, I'm satisfied enough with what I have. The material seems to be slightly heavier than paclite, but it will do the trick in both hot and cold climates. Good enough for me.

Plus, I have to be happy with it, because there's no way I'm going back into the DANGER ZONE! If i went back today to exchange it, I'd probably end up coming back out still with it along with a million other gadgets and travel "essentials" in a bigger bag....
