What are your views on capital punishment?

Are there special circumstances that warrant it?

Didn't some students in America do a project on death row and they proved that someone was innocent?

I think its high time it was brought back here in UK!

There would be less rapings, murders, robberies and less crime in general if people were aware of the consequences of what they are doing!

At present there are no consequences for crimes in UK!

Ask someone from Saudi Arabia/Egypt/middle eastern countries bout rape, robberies etc, you lose a hand/foot or even cock for whatever it is! I guess there wont be many guys trying it! (I even remeber seeing in the SUN newspaper a few weeks back bout a guy in Saudi Arabia who had been found out for raping and murdering a girl - he was hanged in public as well as getting whipped by the victims family!

I know some of you guys may disagree with me but think of it this way! - would you like you SON/DAUGHTER maimed or murdered or shop robbed, find out who done it and then he/she gets off with community service and maybe a £50 fine??????

Time it was back - Tony B has a lot to answer for!

I have mixed emotions about capital punishment. I used to always think I was all for it...but my mother has been a prison guard for 26 years and when the vote came up to reinstate it here, she voted no. I asked her why and she said that she always thought 'an eye for an eye' but if it came right down to having the pull the switchherself, that would make her as guilty as the criminal. So I can understand her thinking. Then again I am the mother of four...and if someone raped or killed my child, I wouldn't have to wait for the police....I would kill them myself...My sister doesn't think that any human being should take the life of another, and she doesn't believe that all people are capable of murder. But I believe with all my heart, that under the right circumstances, EVERYONE is capable of murder. I know it is not a popular opinion, but it is mine.

I'm against it. Although there are people I would like to see dead, I don't feel I have the right to 'cast the first stone' so to speak.

I think a life behind bars is harsh enough punishment for pretty much any crime. And I very much doubt having the death penalty would discourage anyone who is already intent on committing such a serious crime.

I really don't have that much of a problem with the "worst of the worst criminals" being put to death. But I do agree with Peter that life in prison, without any chance of parole, is in many ways just as harsh of a punishment as death.

The problem I do have is that if 1, just 1, innocent person is put to death, then that is a major problem.

So, my opinion on an absoutly guilty person being put to death would be different then my opinion on killing someone who is 99.9999% guilty. Maybe if the crime was captured on video or something that proves the crime 100%, but I don't think you can take a chance of killing an innocent person.

Here in the US, it seems to take so long to actually kill a person on death row, it doesn't seem much different than a life sentence. Except the prisons that hold "death row" prisoners are much harsher. So maybe there would be a way to have worse prisons for worse people. You could have people imprisoned for life, and worse criminals imprisoned, for life without ANY possiblity for parole, in much harsher conditions. Tiny cell (23 hrs. a day), no TV, no radio or music,no contact with people other than the 1 hour a day they'd exercise, never being outside their cell with being shakeled, etc.. That to me would be worse punishment than death, and then no debate necessary.

Like CC said, not a popular opinion but I am personally against capital punishment.

The reasoning behind the death penalty as a punishment derives from the saying "an eye for an eye"...but if it is wrong to kill someone because is immoral, ilegal and not accepted in society, what makes it ok for us (the legal system) to end the life of another? Isnt this a double standard?

I have been asked whether my opinion would be the same if my family was murdered and the answer is yes. The killer should rot in jail and never see the light of day, but even still, I may be naive to believe that there is something good (even if it is just one ounce of our being) in every single one of us. I do believe in second chances but all given the circumstances behind it.

I think it depends on the crime to be honest. Acts of terrorism and war crimes, yes.
Murder, rape, theft, maybe life behind bars with no parole? I don't know.
It's touch a sensitive issue.
I know for sure that if any of my family or loved ones were murdered or raped I would probably feel alot different.
