Sander is right, don't click any of the extra stuff on the Spybot search and destroy...I got pop-ups galore until my son uninstalled then reinstalled (and told me to stop clicking things;))
Thanks for all the useful info, and now that my son has moved out...I just voted you my technical support:)

I use Ad-aware as well...I just downloaded it recently and it's been pretty good so far (although I hardly ever get pop-ups now that I don't use IE anymore....grrrr Microsoft ).

Sander, one question.

My mouse is not working very well. I can't use the scroller and I don't know what's wrong. I've tried cleaning my mouse, but it still doesn't work. So I have to manually click the scrollbar at the side of the page if I want to move the page up or down.

Do you have any suggestions as to what might get the mouse working again?

summer910: Not really. If it isn't dirt, something inside might actually have broken.
If this was just a cheap generic mouse that came with your computer when you bought it, I'd personally just go and buy a new mouse - these things are pretty cheap.

Also for easier scrolling, use the space bar to go down a page (if you happen to use Opera, that will even automatically try to go to the "next" page when you're at the bottom of the current one and hit the spacebar - very nifty), or just the pageup/pagedown keys.

Okay. Thanks very much, Sander. I guess I'll just live with the mouse for now, at least until I decide whether to get a Mac or a new PC.

Hey Summer,

Just bear in mind that Macs are shipped with some pretty bare bones mice: no scroll wheels and only one button - a lot of people hate them (I don't mind actually). So even if you did get a new one, you might prefer it over the standard Apple mouse. Just make sure it's USB and you should be able to use it on either a new Mac or PC!

Thanks for the tip, Peter! I've never really used a Mac before, but I'd like to learn Photoshop, and I hear Photoshop is really stable on a Mac (I tried downloading a trial version for my PC, but my comp froze, bleh). And yeah, the mouse for a Mac doesn't have a scroller and feels pretty odd. But my colleague says a Mac is generally better, less chance of a virus/spyware attack, more stable (less crashing), etc. He's got a really pretty ibook . So I'm kinda torn. I'm pretty used to a PC and I'm afraid that programs won't work as well on a Mac, pages might get screwed up, or thumb-drives don't work etc.

Hi Summer,

Even though Photoshop (and image editing) is probably more popular on Mac's, Photoshop also works fine on a PC. Photoshop costs like $600 though, you might want to look into Photoshop Elements 2.0 (it's less than $100 and would probably do everything you want to do & be much easier to use).

Thanks, Jeff! I thought Photoshop came with Macs, or at least you could get the shop guy to have it installed at the point of purchase. I was really hoping for a free version (cuz I'm broke) and I don't want to have to pay for it and then realise I need to upgrade to a better comp a few months down the road.

I'll look out for Photoshop Elements 2.0, though. If it's easier to use, it's good enough for me.

It's definitely easier to use & will do everything you want to do. Sometimes you can get Photoshop Elements "bundled" (free) with a scanner or something. If not you should be able to get it pretty cheap.
