Hey There, Im a 19 yr old girl from Sydney, australia now living in Hammersmith London. I plan on going to Naples in Italy for a few weeks but ive read that there has been over 130 Mafia related killings in naples in 2004 alone. Is this cause for concern ? would love some advice, and i dont want to run into some Italian Godfather.

Unless you have some shady dealings going on with the mafioso, I don't think you have a thing to worry about. ;)

I agree with the last post. Don't worry about getting Killed by the godfather, unless you are a drugdealer. Maffia is also stealing everything that has some sort of value like a purse, bags, camera and even your city map. So always watch your luggage. Have fun in Napoli,

Again, no problem if you're not into shady dealings. These days I think the Mafia is more of a problem in places like Russia, Budapest, etc. than in Italy.

I agree with everyone else, I don't think there is any reason to worry unless you have a past with the Mafia. Just make sure you're aware of yuor surroundings (as yu shoudl everywhere) and watch your stuff. Carry a bag you can sling over your head as opposed to a purse that you have to hold in your hand or put on one shoulder. Make sure your camera strip is around yuor neck or arm at all times, and don't flash your money about. You should be fine....enjoy your trip and take lots of pictures to post up here on TP!

Well,Naples it's not one of the safest places in Italy..just consider no place in the world is safe if you don't use a small dose of common sense...anyway, it's normal turists are bothered if they're always drunk or give to much confidence to people they do not know...try and not be drunk and enjoy one of the most beautiful cities in Italy.

You would have more chance of getting hit by a car in Italy then being killed by the mafia!

I am Italian, currently living in the north but from near Naples,

first of all mafia was original from Sicily and not from Naples (or Campania)

Second even if still there is a sort of mafious organization in the south of Italy ( as already mentioned in this thread nowdays the mafia interest are in poorer east European and Asian countries such as China where earning are higher with drugs and others profitable criminal way of making money) has nothing to share with poor travellers visiting the country.

third and what I really hate about this term is that is a common Italian Stereotype of my country, i had the chance to travel a lot and usually when you meet abroad new people the first things that they think about your country Italy in my case are: Pizza, pasta and mafia ......

I just whant to conclude that italy is a safe place to go aroud and especially Naples is a very original city where is very easy to meet new people, unfortunatelly the greatest problem of this place is that you will have great difficulties in finding someone speaking English unless you are able to understand italian,... have a nice journey Ignitios.
