I was in TJ to work for about 1-2 weeks last year. It is a ok port city, there is an area where old colonial buildings are. There is a bar street, not too impressive though. I think the city itself has improved a bit because it was under construction all around the city last June. Beijing is about couple of hours near by so you can take a chance to visit them over the weekend. I lived in BJ for 3 months and it is rather nice!!!Good Luck...

I lived in Tianjin for a couple of months last year. It would be starting to get very hot now.

The sky is often grey because of the pollution, but overall TJ is okay. Expats tend to enjoy it. Fashion Street is well worthwhile. As too is Food Street.

You can go to the Great Wall from Tianjin. See if you can get your boss or leader to organise something for you.

Tianjin has its own airport. It is also very close to Beijing
