Belem - Manaus - Tabatinga! By boat!?!

Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean Belem - Manaus - Tabatinga! By boat!?!

Hi people

Flying into Rio at the beginning of Sept and planning to travel north up as far as Belem. From here we are looking at slinging a hammock on a boat and going from Belem to Manaus and then onto the tri- border (Brazil, Columbia and Peru) before arriving in Iquitos.

Has anyone done this trip? I have no real idea how safe (or not) this journey would be.

All comments would be welcome

Cheers

Hey, well now, I did the Belem to Manaus boat 4 days

It is perfectly safe and in my view a wonderful adventure, do you speak portuguese? cos its the perfect time to hone it! Choosing boats is pretty arbitrary but get there early to sling your hammocks although this doesnt stop people slinging theirs over under and everywhere within 3 inches of you!

A lot of people warn about this trip saying its boring and the boat goes down the middle of the river so you dont see much of the forest etc and I would say I wouldn't have done more than Belem Manaus, I did research it and was thinking about it but more than 4 days on the same boat phew! But if youve got stuff to do, read, games ets and people to talk to its really very fun and the times when you just sit back and watch the forest go by or the kids in canoes coming out to catch care packages or watching the sunset its a great experience!

If you're up for it Id say go for it! also the river is supposed to narrow between Manaus and Tabitanga and the view is more spectacular.
The alternative would be fly to Manaus from Belem and get the boat to tabi.T from there?!

hope that helps a bit feel free to PM me with any more Q's :)

Hey, thanks for that, I think it's a must really as it sounds like such an adventure!

May re-think about how far we go on the boat. One alternative is to start in Iquitos (when we get across to Peru) and then travel as far as Manaus I guess.

My Portugese is limited to ummmmmm.....a shrug of the shoulders and a confused expression , but I am learing Spanish as most of our stay in S America will be outside of Brazil.

but keep in mind that the trip , starting from iquitos-manaus-belem goes a lot faster than the other way round as its downstream.

have a nice trip !
