Hey turbopark...looks like you are doing a SE Asia tour. Anyway, here is some help for Saigon:

I would stay on Distric One (another backpacker area), here is a map of it.

Look around Pham Ngu Lao (below the green shaded area ...a street right below it you can see a street called Bu Vien. I stayed at An An Hotel...HIGHLY HIGHLY recommended. The nicest and one of the cheapest hotels I stayed at in Asia. If you click on it, you will be directed to their site. I think I paid $15 for a double room. There is a lot of action around there and a really good bar in the corner called Go Go or something like that. Again, it is a good starting point for walking tours of the city as well. You will have plenty of travel agencies, one that was really good is called TNK or TKN right on Pham Ngu Lao and Bu Vien (few stores fronts away from the corner though).

You must MUST do the Cu Chi Tunnel tour though. Good luck!

By the way, the website of An An Hotel shows a price of $23 for a double room. I didnt pay that, I am sure the prices vary depending on how "desperate" they are to have those rooms occupied.

Best places to eat around Pham Ngo Lao are Cafe 333 and Kims Cafe, both in De Tham Street. Another reasonably priced hotel is Orient Hotel in De Tham street. It is next to Allez Boo which is a popular restaurant/bar with backpackers. The bar Anne is referring to is called Go2. Plays some good music. A very trendy, but, expensive bar is called Lush. Cost 40,000 dong for a beer, as opposed to about 20,000 in most places around Pham Ngo Lao. If you can't be without your sport then cafe Latin across the road from the Sheraton shows just about all major sporting events. As for meeting the ladies, i suggest discos such as Apocalypse Now, or Sahara (the music in Sahara can be very good some nights, and not so good other nights). Try to learn how to say hello and introduce yourself in Viet and it goes a long way!!! I may be back in Saigon at the end of July, if i am i will let you know.
