A canadian girl here had a $1 store washing line and clips which she hung across her bunk, dead handy I thought, although you have to display your undies on it.

Well it sort of depends where you're going. For example, if going to the Himilayas, you don't need the swim suit, etc..

Anyway, lots of good ones have already been mentioned, so I'll try and name 5 that haven't yet been recommended.

1) Bandanas (no matter where I go, I never leave home without these. Preferrably the washed several times and really soft ones. When it's hot I use them to wipe sweat form my face, etc.. I also fold one up and then tie it around my head to cover my eyes to sleep on planes or hotels with too much light (the annoying flashing neon sign outside your window, etc.), I like bandanas better than eye shades, they're softer and more comfortable. They also have other uses. I usually take at least a few.

2) Wash-n-Wipes (to clean hands when I don't have access to water. Also nice on planes when too lazy to walk to restroom)

3) Sunglasses with a neck cord (when traveling you have to go inside and outside a lot, this way they just hang around your neck and you won't loss them).

4) Postcards of the place I live (these are especially useful when visiting "developing" countries. If you're in the middle of nowhere, people are amazed to see the place that you come from. I take a bunch and then give them out as small gifts to people that I meet along the way, guides, etc.).

5) Phasebook (a small one, it can fun to sleak some words of the local language. The local people get a kick out of your attempt to speak in their tongue. Also can come in useful if there are no English speakers around).

o.k these aren't my top five never forget but handy little bits and bobs that you might not think of...

explorer sink plug - how many times have you stayed in a crap hostel where there's no plug?! et voila!

Mini sewing kit - for all sorts you never know when youre gonna rip your favourite shorts!

Tiger balm - for sore lips, mozzy bites, headaches

Ear plugs and sleep mask - for those hostelling moments when your favourite neighbour just wants to talk all night long, or just whenever!

So many interesting but useful things above , but for me, they are:

1)A pair of slippers (to take them after a long journey is very comfortable for my feet)
2)Gold Theragran tablets (to daily keep vitamin etc.)
3)Maps (to find out where I will go and how can I go)
4)Pen
5)A string for hanging wetted clothing

If I hadn't taken earplugs away with me, there would be a noticeable surge in attacks on dorm residents throughout Australia! I really cant stand snoring.
