HI, I wondered if anyone could help me. My boyfriend and I are going to Sydney on the 5 September and want to buy a campervan when we get there. I came across a website called www.travellersmate.com.au on a thread on this site and wondered if anyone had bought a vehicle from them and if so what were they like? I've emailed them a few times and they say that prices will be going up just before we arrive and that if we want we can buy one now. But in order to store it there till we arrive we have to pay full price and I'm a bit nervous about that. If anyone could help that would be great!!
12 weeks and counting...
Nat

Hi Nat, you don't say how long you're going for. There is a 'threshold' of about 3 months, below which it will be more economical to hire instead of buy. If you're staying for much longer, then it's probably worth buying.

I didn't use this company, so can't actually vouch for their service, but I did visit their depot in Sydney. They offer buy-back deals which make life easier for you, but do the sums to see if it's worthwhile.

Hi!
This group look a little suspicious to me - try www.tradingpost.com.au too - The buy back scheme does sound good and might take the hassels out of reselling when you leave, but you can bet you won't get all of your money back! Typically in Australia (if you purchase 2nd hand from a car yard) you have about 10 days after purchase to change your mind and the yard has to pay the bill for any faults found in the first 20-30 days (but this does vary from state to state - check out your rights before you buy!).
Like the other post says - investigate if it is cheaper just to hire - then you will have mechanical assistance and with bigger companies you don't have to drop the van back to the same city.

Good luck!!!!
Erin

Travellers autobarn has been around for ages and are probably one of the best known in terms of car/campervan hire/purchase. I think they offer a certain percentage of the purchase price as a guaranteed rebuy value when travellers leave again. This works well for them since the cars tend to be able to be bought/resold quite a lot :)

As stevieh mentions though, the clue is just how long you are planning to stay for... I agree that the threshold lies around 3 mths.

Hi guys, thanks for your replis. I'm heading out for 12 months - we were originally gonna hire a camper form wicked campers for 3 weeks but we decided it would probably be better to buy one so we weren't restricted by time and were more free to do what we wanted. I'm still looking into buying a camper so if anyone has any ideas , suggestions or advice it would all be greatly appreciated!!

Hi Nat,

myself and friends of mine who have travelled either to New Zealand or Australia have bought campervans offered by other travellers. We checked the notice boards in hostels and sometimes you can be really lucky and find a great ad. Of course it might not be as safe as if you buy it from a car dealer, but most of the times a bit cheaper and if you or your boyfriend have a bit of a clue about campervans you might want to consider this option.
Have lots of fun in Australia!

Steff
