My boyfriend and I will be backpacking through Costa Rica at the end of August for 10 days. We want to make the most of our time there and are interested in both wildlife and the beaches. I'd love to hear from other travelers about the must-see and must-do things in this country. Or, are there any hyped-up places that we should avoid? Also, any advice for traveling during the rainy season would be great, as well as advice on the best hostels. Thanks a lot!
I really enjoyed my visit to Tortuguero. You may want to look into visited the rainforest there. The 4 hour boat ride there is also very cool.
I wouldn't worry about travelling in the 'rainy season' Costa Rica only has two seasons - wet and very wet. Buy an umbrella and maybe invest in a good 'breathable' waterproof jacket. Just don't expect your clothes to ever be really dry. Keeping a few of those silica gel sachets in your camera bags is a good idea to help keep your gear from getting damp and mouldy.
Tortuguero is a great place to experience the beauty of the rain forest from the water. You actually get to see stuff which can be difficult when you're in amongst the trees.
River rafting on the Pacuare river is fantastic. beautiful scenery and a good combination of white-knuckle rapids and more chilled slower sections which enable you to really soak up the atmosphere.
