I have buggered up my plans a little and have two nights in between nice and venice has anyone got any ideas on cheap places that would be good on that route, is it worth going to milan i heard it wasn't that great any little places worth a visit on the way
Cinque Terre - just over the border from France. 5 hillside villages on the coast. Lots of backpackers there.
Then you could get the train from Genoa or Milan to Venice.
Also, Verona is a nice spot to spend a couple of days. I know a great campsite situated on the castle walls, if you have a tent? A great spot to meet other travellers.
Personally i found Milan a little lacking for the backpacker. Not a lot to do for free and not a whole lot more to see either. I quite enjoyed Verona, though that is significantly closer to Venice than Nice. Otherwise its just a case of having a look on a map and picking a random place, great way of finding hidden treasures.
I also liked Verona. The old hang out of "Romeo & Juliet."
By the way, I wouldn't recommend Milan, nothing special, just a city.
Milan is nothing special, apart from a way of spending money very fast.
As the others have stated, Verona is great and your not far from Lake Garda.
Also Padoa is well up there. Not a touristy place, but well old and full of history. There is a backpackers right in the middle of the old city centre.
Padoa is also less than an hour from Venice. The bus is quick and easy.
