Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean strange question: guitars in south america

Hiya
I'm going to south america (Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Peru) for 10 weeks in about a month. I play the guitar and am worried I'll get really bad if I don't play for that long, and want to either take a guitar with me, or buy one in south america. I'd much prefer the latter. Is it possible to pick up an instrument in the big cities? Are they expensive?
Thanks a lot!
Dom

Quite easy! Specially in Sao Paulo. There is a street - Rua Teodoro Sampaio - where there are bunch of musical instruments (mainly guitars) stores. The stores are located in the high part of the street near Hospital das Clinicas. You just have to leave at subway station 'Clinicas' - green line - and take Rua Teodoro Sampaio. Going down the street you will find a lot of stores with good prices.

You can find good inexpensive guitars here in Rio. Take the subway to CARIOCA station, cross the big square and go to "Rua da Carioca". There are more than 3 stores selling instruments there. Probably the best prices in Rio. One of my friends bought a brand new guitar there for US$ 40 last week (not bad quality).
