Hey Wouter, last time I was in Amsterdam (Sept 98) there was this huge parade going on through the streets, there were all these floats done up in flowers representing countries or something, remember there was one with the Sydney Opera House on it, it was really amazing, what is it called? Do they do it every year? And yes I probably had just come out of a coffeeshop, but no I didn't imagine it

I am not sure but I think it has to do something with the gay games that were held in Amsterdam in august 1998. Many lesbians and gaymen from around the world (like Afghanistan and Zimbabwe) came to Amsterdam for the olympic games for sports.

Travel100 I don't believe you've seen more then the coffeshops in Amsterdam. There is more in Holland then just that

Hey, I multi-task!!! I've been to all the museums (The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, etc.), Anne Frank's house (three times), etc.

And now the big surprise. You have seen more in Amsterdam then I did. Never went to Rijksmuseum, I want to (I like that art from the golden age)but in a way never did it.

That's terrible! Go tomorrow. Sit and gaze at the "Night Watchmen."

Yeah 'de nachtwacht' that one is great. I am proud of Rembrandt, I wonder if he got his inspiration in the coffeeshop

While you're in Amsterdam, also visit Rembrandt's house. The one he lived in before he went bankrupt . Did you know they actually cut a meter or so off 'de nachtwacht' because it was too big for the frame . And yea, I'm pretty sure he hung out in the "coffeeshops" .

On the subject of coffeeshops, my Dutch friends would not be caught dead in one because they say they are for the tourists. They visit their favorite, buy and go home like all Dutch people. They make one exception when I visit. If the weather is nice and it is late in the day we will go to the T-Boat, on Oudenshans the only coffeeshop on a boat. We "relax", sit at a table on deck and watch the tourist boats go by. It is near the Waterlooplein market and the big Albert Heijn supermarket.

I've met A LOT of Dutch locals in coffeeshops. I've found it depends which coffeeshop. In some there are all tourists, and in others usually lots of locals. Especially in towns other than Amsterdam, there I've found more locals than tourists in the coffeeshops.

i've been to a few coffee shops which are outside the town centres and i'm normally the only foreigner there , i think it just depends where you go...

Most people (who smoke very infrequently)are not going to smoke in the coffeeshop itself. Normally they buy it there and smoke it somewhere more relaxing like home with some friends.........the coffeeshop itself is more for the diehard smoker, those guys that are there all the time. Normally that are the people you don't want to talk with.
