Edinburgh is a great city - really vibrant, quite cosy, easy to get around. Visit Edinburgh castle, Arthur's Seat/The Royal Mile, climb the Scott Monument, Edinburgh Art Gallery, wandering around the shops in the old town, whiskey tasting

Hire a car and drive up to Fort William to see Ben Nevis. The scenery up there is spectacular (even when its pouring rain). Great hiking if you are interested.

If you have time continue up to Inverness - its gorgeous up there. Take a boat trip on Lough Ness.

My favorite place in Scotland is the Isle of Skye. Absolutely spectacular!

Stirling is a nice wee town, the Castle is cool & there is also the William Wallace Memorial (Braveheart)

Caerlaverock Castle - Dumfries

Urquart Castle Ruins on Loch Ness - this is one of my favourite ruins,
make sure to look out for Nessie while your there

The Highlands - John O'Groats at the top of Scotland, has the last house in Scotland, take the coastal walk to Duncansby Head there is an amazing rock formation coming up out of the sea called 'the stack'

Glasgow Cathedral is worth a visit if your in Glasgow..

I live in Scotland and when people ask this I always say Edinburgh first (I don't think a trip to Scotland is possible without visiting Edinburgh) but Cape Wrath second. Cape Wrath probably isn't for everyone, but personally I find it the most beautiful place I've been to in Scotland. Skye is nice too.

Edinburgh is very pretty, but if you want great music, bars, nightlife, people, fantastic restaurants and you want to see some great museums, architecture, and generally go to a fantastically cultural city GLASGOW. Hell i sound like an advert from the tourist board, and I'm not even from Glasgow, I'm English, but i promise you it's great!
Oh and the West End area of glasgow is all very pretty too!

If you're in Edinburgh at the end of August you might catch the Edinburgh Festival - it's the best time for tourists to be in the Capital plus the shows are great!

Beware if you visit the west coast though - the scottish midge is a viscious insect so bring you insect repellent!
