hi! I've just arrived from india...
In India, avoid Delhi and Bombay. The traditional Rajastan circuit is a must. Try to go Srinagar-Ladak by road... it is an out of beaten route crossing completely different cultures inside india (muslin and budism).
Try also Ajanta.
Cheers.

Thanks for all the advice guys! Ok we were originally going to go with the route wouterrr suggested but we worked it out and we would only have 2 or 3 days in each place. We are now thinking of flying into Delhi (as it is a long distance up from Bombay) and taking the following route..

Delhi
Jaipur
Agra
Varanasi
Kolkata

That way we could spend some time getting to know the places. Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Bob

Between Agra & varanasi, try and stop in Khajuraho (it's one of my favorite places I've visited in India), and it's on the way.

How are you getting form place to place? There's a plane special that goes (delhi-agra-khajuraho-varanasi). In essence you get the stops for free.

I'm on my way out right now, when I get home I'll see if I can find any info on it.

Hi Bob,
If you're going to Varanasi and then Calcutta, I guess you could afford going to Bodhgaya.
I can't tell from my own experience because I've never been there, but I've read so much about it that I'm tremendly curious on going there next time I'll be in India. It's the birthplace of Budhism so it should be worth the stop.
Cheers

Hi Joao,

Cheers for that. I've looked up Bodhgaya and it looks very interesting alright! On the way to Calcutta so may well stop off there for a day or two

hey bob, about transportation:
- if you are short of time, there is a 7-days airpass from Indian Airlines and JetAirways (better)... you pay 300 us$ and fly how many times you want within a specific region and in one wk.
- Mainly in rajasthan, forget the trains... catch a bus!!
cheers!

Thanks for that. The travel pass sounds good, but I think we would be better off travelling by land, we'll see more that way I think.

Hey Travelbob,

So what have you decided? What is the India itinerary?

It's hard to decide where to go becuase there is so much to see in India, it's a facinating place!
