Travel Forums General Talk years worth of anti-malarials for girl on pill!!

hi guys. my girlfriend caroline and i are going travelling through se asia and india for 12 months. caroline takes the pill and we have realised that doxycycline (the antimalarial we had decided to get) isn't compatible with the pill. i am thinking of sticking with doxy but caroline can't take those anymore. she wants to stay on the pill and obviously take anti-malarials. what other types can she take? doxy appealed cos we were quoted £65 for a years worth on prescription from gp. malarone is hugely expensive and has ghastly side effects. are there other anti-malarials that are reasonably priced, or available out there, that we can consider? what about chloroquine? money is a bit of an issue here. all this vaccine and malaria business is doing my bloody head in! HELP.

cheers, joey

Two things I can suggest to you (after spending $90 on anti-malaria medicine to be used in Asia):

Get yourself the best bug repellent around or take the only option left for you: MEFLOQUINE. Thats the one I took. One side effect is the weird dreams she may have, but as far as I know that may be the only side effect.

Malarone is the best with the least side effects but because of the cost, it is highly undesirable.

I am the type of person that gets bit by every single bug in a 3 mile radius, so I make for a good guinea pig...if there are any bugs they will come straight to me. I hiked in Northern Thailand and I can tell you that I did not get bit once. We even stayed at some villages FULL and I mean FULL of bugs. Not one came near me. I used Avon Skin So Soft repellant and a light spray of 100% deet for the hike. The rest of the time I had just the Avon cream. I swear by it now. If it worked on me, it would work on anyone!
