there is more to Bangkok than Khaosan Rd.

Have you checked Thonburi khlongs and floating markets?

My favourite area is around Taling Chan - you can feel like in a countrysite

To me Bangkok is just the perfect place for a pit stop in SE Asia...it gives you a chance to recharge and reload before marching on to the next place. It is cheap so it is a good place for it.
I personally didnt like Bangkok as a city all that much but I liked the people, the friendliness, and the culture. The rest of Thailand is certainly beautiful!

Am you hoping to find some or avoid them? The majority of the naughty nightlife is in distinct areas. The most famous are Patpong, Nana Entertainment Plaza and Soi Cowboy. These areas are chock full of bars/clubs that have ladies and ladyboys that will service the customers. Good places to avoid if the 'pay for play' scene offends you. BKK is large enough that you will not come into contact with this element unless you are looking for it.

I Love Bangkok. I am actually going to be there next week as 1st stop of a 3 week break in Thailand. Bangkok has evrything, great shopping, great nightlife and great cultural sights such as Wat Pho, Golden Mount and The Grand Palace it is also close to other places such as Ayutthaya, Pattaya and Hua Hin that are worth exploring.
Sure there are hookers in Bangkok but there in every major city throughout Asia and there not a problem.
I think BKK actually has a bad reputatio that it probably doesnt deserve.

I have been to Bangkok many times. The first time in 1997. The last - a few months ago. I even had an apartmentin the suburbs for a couple of months in 2003. I still have a few Thai & western friends.

Bangkok to me is just like living in the western world. A big modern city. A lot of western influences.

I usually don't like staying in any really big city for too long, but the best thing about Bangkok is you can fantastic flight deals there.

I don't know who you talked to during your 4 days, but if it was only in Khao San ...

Me also. I also spent 7 days in Bangkok. But it did not attarct me. The city is old, crowdy & not decent enough to visit with wife.

It depends where you stay and how much money you've got. Bagkok has certainly improved over the years. The BTS has reduced some of the traffic problems

Personally, i think Bangkok lacks the charm and character of some of SE Asia's other capital cities (ie, Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh, Vietiane etc). It has always been my point of entry when arriving in Thailand and i generally look forward to leaving Bangkok behind me. I think when you first arrive the city has a buzz and excitement about it, but once the novelty wears off after a couple of days it's time to move on.
