Hey folks,

Wondering if any one can help me out. I am leaving Ireland to go RTW at the end of August .I want to know what the story is with tourist visas for the following places Thailand,Cambodia,Laos, Vietnam and Hong Kong.
I was told that I would need a tourist visa to enter all of these places except Hong Kong .Does anone know if this is accurate? Because my NZ visa is going to take 6-8 weeks to organise I'm kinda running out of time.
Would I be better getting a visa for my first stop Thailand and while there getting the rest of the visas? Will this take up too much time? Should I just try to sort it all out before we leave Ireland? It's all starting to make my head hurt.
Oh and as a last point how hard would it be to get a visa in Hong Kong to enter mainland China?
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hong Kong visa on arrival

If you want a month visa for Laos you need to get it in advance (i.e. Bangkok). Certainly when I was last there only 15 day visas were available at the border.

hello mate. know exactly how you feel with all this visa crap. it was driving me mad til i completely sussed it out.

basically it goes like this:

thailand- you can get a 30 day visa at airport on arrival. it says you have to have an onward flight booked for within 30 days but loads of people, including lonely planet, say they never check. so you will definitely get a 30 day visa when you get off the plane!!

laos- 15 day visas are available at main border crossings, otherwise you can apply for 30 day visa in bangkok

vietnam- you will have to sort out visa in bangkok. they last for 30 days and cost quite a lot! NONE are issued on borders! you may have to state where you will be entering and leaving the country. get it done at a decent travel agent in bangkok, there is even an STA Travel there!

cambodia- you can get 30 day visas on major borders with thailand and vietnam. i will be crossing from near ho chi minh to phnom penh, and can definitely get a visa there on that particular border. i'm not sure about border between laos/cambodia mind.

also, you can get pretty much any visa you could possibly need in bangkok. my girlfriend and i will be getting 6 month india visas from there. you would probably be able to get one for china from there, but i'm sure you could get one in hong kong too.

hope this helps and you have a wicked trip! stop letting all this visa shite give you a headache!
