Hi Bjoern,

The 2 main jetboat rides are: (both great)
Shotover Jet - Shotover River, Queenstown, $100nz
Huka Jet - Waikato River, Taupo, $80

Have a look at this site for Orakei Korako, its a thermal wonderland & I so recommend a visit to it, the entry is $22

You can do a tour of Hobbiton in Matamata for $50

Cheers,
Fiona

there is also the dart river safari out of queenstown which combines a jet boat ride with a nature walk and lotr info and sites. $185nz
i found that the shotover jet was alot to pay for such a short thrill.

For volcanic activity got to Rotorua.
You can do the Tongariro crossing from Whakapapa village, approx 5 hrs, walking over mount Tongariro, passing Mount Ngauruhoes base (Mount Doom).
Check with the department of Conservation, www.doc.govt.nz for info about the crossing.

The tongariro crossing is awesome, has to be worth doing if you want to see volcanoes - seeing red crater smouldering away behind the emerald lakes is not to be missed. There is a bus from Taupo that will drop you off at one end and pick you up at the other - costs about $15 from what I remember. It is very weather dependent though - the bus runs on the advice of the DOC, and if it's bad they stop all but the dedicated from going up.

I really enjoyed the Dart River Safari, I thought it was worth the (expensive) fee, the scenery around that patch is some of the most stunning I've seen anywhere let alone New Zealand. This would also be a good place to walk (from Glenorchy) to see LOTR locations, as there are quite a few round here (Isengaard, Snowy Mountains etc). Check the DOC website as per kiwimuzz.
