Hi grannelly,

This one has actually come by quite a few times already and i think the search function really shows some good advice. Here's a few recent threads that should be quite helpful but there are a ton more:

thread 9182
thread 9740
thread 10387

Hope that helps!

Hiya, as Sam I am says there are plenty of good answers on those other threads. However, with the ANZ account there is another account they have which you can apply for before you get to Oz and put money in and then when you arrive you just need to show your passport and boarding card for ID and they will unlock the account. If you go to their website and select open account then special requirements its all there. There is a $5-10 monthly charge but this allows you unlimited transactions with your card whereas the other one doesn't charge you but you only get 6 free transactions a month so can cost you more in the long run - if like me you use your card a lot in shops and don't like getting large sums of money out of the bank in one go!
Hope this helps x

Hi Grannelly, CITIBANK have a travellers account that you can set up online before you leave and also transfer the money. http://www.citibank.com.au/portal/tbz/htm/aboutTheAccount.html is where you'll find information on this. Keep in mind Citibank have only 1 walk-in branch in Sydney. And very few around Australia. Everytime you use a Citibank account you are also using someone elses ATM and so get stung with $1.00 - $1.50 fees per transaction.

I would go with Westpac bank or St George. Bring some travellers cheques (not many) to open the account. Then wire the rest of your money from home when the account is open. Both of these banks have hundreds of branches and their own ATM network. All you need to open the account for your first 6-weeks in Oz is your passport. Its worth 100 points [ID is measured in points; after 6 weeks your passport only 60.

Good luck

Greg

Hiya,

Just a quick note that the Nationwide building society in England are the ONLY bank / Building society that don't charge to take money out abroad. You could open an account with them and take money out over there to put into your oz account which saves having to take a load of travellers cheques.

Cheers

When we chatted the other night grannelly, you seemed to have taken a shine to the ANZ. Have you made any firm decisions yet?

Hey,

Depends where in Oz you plan to be. A friend of mine had problems with the Commonwealth back, and another set up an account with St George before she lef the UK, only to find, there was no branch or ATM in Perth (she spent 3 months working there and was charged for every withdrawl she made from another bank)

I've got an account with ANZ, it was very easy to open, and I pay $5 a month and can make withdrawls as many times as I like!

Hope that helps

Rhiannon ;)
