I am going to be a young traveller who wishes to travel to oz in january 2006! I was thinking that I would use the work and travel company when out there as i am a first time traveller. Has any one used this, it looks good! also i am on my own so would be great to get to meet fellow travellers on the flight out there:)
I'm sure that many people have done this route, if so could you let me know of the best places to stay and the best mode of transport as cannot drive!
So looking forard to it, any tips on the life in australia would be great
Thanks

Hi Jenny,
there are cheaper and better options than work and travel company. Do some research. You will meet plenty of people on the way and especially as soon as you arrive in Oz. The money you save could be spent having a few drinks with new found friends.

Shop around

When we were out there we took the Greyhound bus to do this route, it was OK and not too expensive. I think there is a rival company that do the same thing (Premier?). There's plenty of help for backpackers to find work in Oz, I don't think you need to pay someone to help.

Also - don't worry about meeting people, if you stay in hostels you will meet loads of people whether you want to or not!!!

heya, my friends out in oz at the moment, on a working visa and has not had a great deal of trouble finding work. I guess it just depends where you are and what youre looking for. Obviously sydney in december, you might have some trouble coz theyll be loads of people looking for holiday work! Also, check out some of the bigger city hostels - a lot of them give helping hands on finding work and assist with setting up bank accounts etc... Try the wake up! hostel in sydney for example...

There are also some fairly good sites devoted to backpackers job if you look around, like this seasonal jobs page... gives you links to loads of places all over the country with contacts so you can get a job sorted before you even get there!

Like the others say, I'd shop around a bit more. Obviously, if youre still not liking the idea of doing it so independently, then the work travel company is probably your best option. Theres a few other comapnies that offer the same sort of service yhat you might also want to check out...

as for travelling about... the cheapest option is probably the greyhound - iv got a mileage pass which is going to pretty much cover me for the whole of oz for about 380 quid (west, east, and inbetween!) Obviously there are more "backpacker" orientated option... like the oz experience ( http://www.ozexperience.com/ ) and other tours run by various companies, like:

http://www.letstrekaustralia.com/

which run more set itinaries and dont allow jump on jump off like the oz ex and greyhound would allow. And the groovy grape thing which does both set itinaries and jump on jump off, but again more expenive than the greyhound bus.

might also be worth checking out this one...

and the sta site coz they also assist with working visas ans tours and travel etc

hmm, quite a lot of info there, so i hope at least some of its of use to you!

Have a great time, I'll be in sydney for xmas and new year, so might catch you out there?
