Hey Guys,

I will be travelling to Toronto on the 24th of June and will be there for a week. However, since booking my flight people have told me that Montreal is a much better city for young people and have hence decided to make a trip up there during that week.

I was hoping that someone could direct to some sites or give some personal recommendations about trains that travel from Toronto to Montreal. I have seen a few deals that will take you to Niagara Falls also, with two nights in each Toronto and Montreal...these were priced at about $450 US.

I also dont mind travelling directly there, preferrably on an overnight train to save a nights expenses in a hostel etc...

Any help would be great.

The direct train from Toronto to Montreal takes only 4 hours and costs only $140 I think if you book in advance. If you want to save $$, you can take the overnight bus, which is a little less expensive and much more uncomfortable. Niagara Falls is really just a water fall and nothing much else. I'd just take bus from Toronto, go there for a day trip or stay over 1 night.

Montreal's nightlife is awesome, you'll definitely enjoy it! If you come after June 30th there's also the Jazz Fest, which is always fun, even if you're not into jazz. Make sure you reserve the accomodation in advance though, end of June/ beginning of July is very busy in Montreal.

i agree montreal nightlife is awesome and you should deffenately check out the jazz festival. the train is nice, but i've never minded the bus. its 90 $ for a student and i believe 130$ for adult. its about 7 hours and if you take it overnight you can stretchout in the backseats and sleep. but if comfort is your thing take the train. if you only have a week skip niagara falls and go directly to montreal. maybe 3 days in toronto and 4 in montreal. check out, or

Once you get to Toronto you should stay in one of the hostels there! There is a tour runs a few times a week to Niagara for $45 from the hostels by the Magic bus company! Check out my gallery for a few photos of it! Its a really good tour - very socially orientated! Say hi to Timmy (the driver) for me!

I also got the bus to Ottawa from Toronto (which was going on to Montreal - ~$50/probably about 80/90 to Montreal). It wasnt the most comfortable but lets you see much more rural canada.

Any questions pm me!

Hi Smythy,

My bf and I went on a VIA Rail Canada overnight train between Toronto and Montreal. It was fairly expensive, and we booked a 'renaissance double bedroom', but that didn't mean a double bed, it meant 2 bunks!! It was also very small, I wouldn't want to stay in that tiny room when I was awake!
That said, it was clean and served our purpose. The facilities were better (cleaner, more modern and private) than Amtrak sitting carriages. :)
Also, I don't know how much you would save taking the overnight train, rather than staying the night in a hotel - I think we paid $Canadian 200+ !!
