Then flew to Lijiang. Then bus to Zhongdian (Shangrila).

How did you like this area? Was it very Tibetan?

How about in Vietnam? Where did you go there?

Lijiang's old town looks very nice and larger than I imagined. Also, the nearby Yulong XueShan (snow mountain) is worth visiting. However, three days is enough for that area. The nearby villages were disappointing.

The 4-5 hour bus trip to Zhongdian was rough about 1/2 the time, but very interesting and scenic. The route goes along the Yangtze River up to the point of Tiger Leaping Gorge. Because there are only small buses that go from Lijiang to Zhongdian, I had to carry my bags on my lap for the whole trip.

Zhongdian itself is only a very small, dusty, and dark town. However, it was a good place to be away from too many people and cars. I went to three lakes in the area. The only one worth visiting was Bitahai. Actually, the best part was the hike to the lake as I passed by many cows, yaks, and horses.

Outside of Zhongdian, there are any Tibetan homes with the little white flags on the tops of each house. I did enjoy some very nice Tibetan food at a small restaurant/inn in Zhongdian.

However, I made one huge mistake. I didn't take the 6-hour bus to Deqin. Therefore, I think I missed the best parts of Shangrila.

I'll write about Vietnam soon.

Zhongdian is becoming a real go ahead place with the highway going through.

From later this month, it will be possible to catch a bus from Zhongdian 9Shangri La) to Lhasa in Tibet.

I also noticed construction of a highway between Lijiang and Zhongdian. Will the Zhongdian to Tibet bus go through Deqin?

BTW, you're up pretty late tonight.

This link will provide you with more information ....

Bus Between Zhongdian/Xianggelila and Lhasa (香格里拉-拉萨的汽车)

I personally liked the minibus drive from Lijiang to Zhongdian. It's amazing to see how the flow of the Yangtze is controlled. However, I don't feel very comfortable in altitudes higher than 3250 metere above sea level.

I was out last night in the Wen Li Jie cafe area, Kunming with a couple of Naaxi (Lijiang minority) friends. I'd prefer the Chinese hangouts. However the girls are fascinated by the laowai spots. They were especially impressed by The Prague Cafe (Czech) and Salvador's Coffee House (Italian). The French Cafe doesn't do much for me.

I got home about 11.30pm. I write for various sites (especially in China & SE Asia). I usually have several computer windows open at the same time. By the time I check all sites and my email accounts, two hours has easily passed. If you are interested in more, then you may care to click this link

There's only a couple of weeks until the end of the teaching year here at the university. I'll be leaving Kunming, so I guess there is a certain sense of urgency WRT available time at the moment. During the summer break, I should be travelling abroad. In late August, I'll move to Chengdu to commence a new year contract

I live just south of china now on a little island. to get the visa i either needed to have a visa agency take my passport all the way back to the mainland US for me cuz i'm a Yank, or just get it in Hong Kong. means i need to stay overnight in Hong Kong, but found a great rate on a hostel so no biggy. i'll let you know end of July if i had any troubles. caution on india. when i went, i tried to get in via Kazakhstan and the Indian embassy there. they told me i should have arranged the visa before leaving the states and they weren't giving me one .... unlike most other countries, i couldn't get the visa at the border. luckily for me, a company kaz said i'd been working there for two years so they finally gave me one. might want to check to see if that's still the case if you plan to hit india. the good thing is the visa was good for three months so you don't need to do a any clock work planning

G'day, I'm in deqin at the moment about to cross into tibet. Anyone know what the cost of a visa and permits are? I got here from lijiang by bus to weixi then along the badi route to deqin. No tourists at all coz there nothing much to see ...

Cheers.

You may unfortunately have to head back down to Xianggelila if you want a permit. You could try asking at the places around fei lai si, but I wouldn't get your hopes up.
