Was just talking to an American Express rep and was asking what options I had besides using travellers cheques in getting access to my cash during my trip. She advised that I apply for an American Express Gold card, which allows the card holder to be able to cash personal cheques in the local currency along with the card. How it works is that you would go to any American Express Travel Office anywhere in the country and you would write them a personal cheque from your own banking account and present them the Gold card, and they will cash your cheque in teh local currency of the country you are in.... There is a $5000 limit on the total amount you can cash for every 21 days.
I just wanted to know if anyone has heard of this or used this option. I am from Canada and I was going to use my debit card around the world to have access to my funds. However, after asking around all of the Cdn banks, it seems that they all charge a $2-3 transactional fee and than another "convenience fee" that is charged based on the bank in the country itself, and that fee could be about $5.00 in the local currency....that is a lot of fees at the end of the day.... Anyone with comments or ideas??
