Iam right now in Vientiane and I'm also thinking about this problem. Or let me say, I decided to do it by bus, becuase thats a difference of 75 dollars. My book says it''s just 22 hours, but that is still a long time. Tomorrow I''ll go to get some informations about the bus. I could let you know then how it looks like, if it is not to late for you.

bye david

I'd say take the plane!!! Those journeys seem exciting and exotic but will probably be miserable and boring.

take the bus.

i went from hanoi to vientienne and it's a long journey but definately an interesting one. the guys running the bus were smuggling some sort of dodgy basket thing over the border and stopped to buy squirrel meat along the way but we loved every minute of it. we got it for much cheaper also. i think it was $12. as long as you use a local service and not a tourist bus you'll have a good journey. i got some amazing photographs from that journey and had good chat with the locals.

we also had a great time on the 'speedboat' from luang prabang back to thailand. it took about 6 hours maybe and it was the size and shape of a canoe with an engine attatched. the journey was uncomfortable but definately one of the best and most memorable days and also the funniest.

hope this info helps!

i did the speed boat the other way ad it was quality - loud, quick and fun - but steal a pillow from the hostel the night before to save your back/bum from the constant bumps
