Hi there,
just wondering if I'm the only one who receives those creepy emails from guys who are looking for friendship, romance etc. over travellers point.
I'm just surprised that they contact me, bec everyone can read in my profile that I'm living with the man of my dreams and only came back to NZ bec of him.
I reported him as Spam (bec I got so pissed off), but not sure if that's gonna help.
Are there any other ways to prevent things lke that from happening??
TP is such a great homepage and I don't want guys like that to riun that!!!!
thanks
Kathi

Hi Kathi,

I saw your spam report and in fact this guy was definitely a spammer so thanks for reporting him. It blocks him from sending more messages and also when then confirmed by Pete or me, makes it impossible for others that might have received messages from him to read them.

In general, I think considering the amount of traffic we get, the number of this type of messages people get is not too high. It also requires a lot of manual copy/pasting which is something real spammers prefer not to do (ie, they just send out a million emails in one go).

Any time you do get something weird like that, definitely mark it as spam!

Cheers,

Sam

Hi Kathi

I've just read your profile and the following comment is meant to be helpful. Some words can be easily misunderstood or misinterpreted. Perhaps it might pay you to have a closer look at the words you've used to describe yourself in your profile.

I disagree for two reasons. Firstly I don't find anything even remotely suggestive in Kathi's profile and secondly and more importantly, I doubt it was even read by the person that sent the message (he sent another 20 so probably just selected members that had just signed up like himself...). In real spam cases, the acts are quite random and they just do what is easiest for them at the time.

Ah yes, the joys of the internet and bring people closer together :)

I was trying to be very subtle.

The word "openminded" could be misconstrued.

From the other angle, it could be. For an example, if you describe yourself as 'open-minded', some people would think that you might be a very 'easy-going' person.

That's the 'quality' of certain expressions.

Stay calm,
Lee

Maybe I'm being simple but I view open-minded as a great asset in someone, i think that most people who have traveled become more open minded and less judgemental of other cultures

I agree with Sam though that most spam is sent to random names on a list, I often receive some by email and so does my friend but our email adddress's start with the name four letters so its just a fluke / or laziness.....

Thanks Guys

Now that you've put it that way, I completely agree

Hi guys,

thanks for all your replies. before I started the thread we had a look at my profile and thought, that it should be OK (specially when I say that I'm living with my partner etc.).

Yes, the word open minded can be missunderstood, but like many of you said, I meant it the 'travellers-way': to be open for different cultures, experiences, people etc.

Although I was probably just unlucky to get that email, I will still change my profile a little bit...

have a nice day
Kathi

That's all it was Kathi! Your profile is just fine and change it only if you really feel the need. Being open-minded is a good quality and one you should be proud of possessing.

Spamming is usually a random act and you just happened to be caught in the crosshairs of this one! Glad to see you are still here!
