I've done a couple of those take-the-tourists-to-gawp-at-the-natives trips, one at Matmata in Tunisia and the 'meet the Orang Asli' thing at Taman Negara.

I felt a bit uncomfortable wandering around the 'homes of native people', especially when you're not being guided by one of them. The Malaysian guide reckoned that the money that the Orang Asli get from the gawping lets the Orang Asli maintain their traditional way of life whilst having the option of sending children to school/having healthcare etc., though I'm not sure all the effects are that positive - westernisation of diet, etc, were quite apparent. Is that condescending?

So, what is your view, Samsara?

Hi Ciku,

Well, I personally have never been in a situation where I have felt like that, but I was interested to hear if anyone else had.

I would imagine that, as Magykal said, it would feel weird to wander through tribal villages and homes in poorer countries, but if they welcome the tourism then it's okay. :)

I often think about whether people in a particular country or place resent the steady influx of tourists and its effect on their environment. Money does drive the world, but everything isn't about economics.

I felt like i was intruding when i walked into the house of one of the H'mong tribe in Sapa. The whole family were sat in this tiny little room cooking, and a group of tourists just wandered in, gawping at the conditions they live in. If i was sat at home eating my dinner and a group of H'mong tourists walked in i wouldn't be too chuffed about it!!!!!

You took the words right out of my mouth, Dave. I was just thinking of Sapa as I read the earlier posts in this thread. We've also had Sapa pictures featured on TP by at least three members including you & I ....
