Thanks for all the feedback, everybody. That, combined with the advice of a couple of people I personally know who've done the RTW thing before, led me to decide on a backpack. I got one yesterday - side opening with a detachable rucksack (meaning I can in effect have either two pieces of luggage o combine them into one). Total capacity 88 litres, and only £45! Not bad, eh!

Areinstein: I'm going London-Tokyo-Osaka-Bangkok-Singapore-Brunei- Perth-Sydney-Tonga-Samoa-Auckland-Fiji-Los Angeles-London, plus I'll try to get separate trips to other Asian and south Pacific destinations while I'm in Thailand, Samoa and Fiji.

Has to be abackpack-I bought a Lowe Alpine Cerro Torre. In any city you have steps(the Metro in paris with a suitcase ...never again).backpacks are so much handier.
