Hello everyone,
Today was my boss's birthday so we had a party for him here at work. There was good food, we sang him happy birthday, and of course there was cake. I said "Soooo can you see the hill yet Mr. Old Guy?" in a very joking manner, but everyone just stopped and stared at me including my boss. It was the most uncomfortable silence. I didn't know if I had offended anyone and I certainly didn't think the joke was inapropraite. After a few maddening seconds of silence I blurted out with: "Oh God! This parachute is a knapsack!" in an attempt to break the silence and let everyone know that I knew I had put my foot in my mouth. Everyone broke into laughter.

Has anyone here ever had a moment like this? And what did you do to break the uncomfortable silence?... (spare no embarrassing details)

I ran into a girlfriend that I hadn't seen in ages but I had heard she was expecting... in a large shopping mall(she looked very, verypregnant.) I asked excitedly "WHEN are you going to have that baby?" She just stared at me for (what seemed like forever) and said "I had her months ago...she is out in the car with her father"...there was NO way I could suck those words back into my mouth...so I sulked away feeling like the biggest heel on the planet. (I have a TON of embarassing moments...I am just lucky that way;))

Haha CupCake! Thats even better than mine! Embarrassing moments are good though. They build your character (at least thats what I tell myself :))

You would think it would teach me to think first...talk later! ;)
(My darling husband just looks at me whenever I do this (happens pretty often) and says "Why don't you try letting that thought run through your head before it pops out your mouth"....
(He knew what he was getting into...not like this trait just showed up;))

What about if someone knows you love her and you know she loves you too but both of you do not dare to 'break the ice', is that considered as 'uncomfortable silence'?

I would say so..

I know a similar story to yours, CC, but it happened to my mum. She met a friend she hadn't seen for some time and she looked pregnant. So my mum asks "How far gone are you?" to which the woman replied "Oh, about 20 donuts or so.."

Are you trying to tell us something, cikusang?

Haha! But at least it sounds like your mum's friend has a wonderful sense of humor! :)

[ Edit: Fixed quote ]

Huh? Nothing...it's a famous quote from a HK's author.

That`s not just the uncomfortable silence, but the saddest thing in the world, according to the writer.

evakan, your story can be written into TV shows like Friends. Very suitable to be spoken out by Chandler.
