Hi Peter,

I think it would be nice to have our member's photo on their profile page. ;)

Hi Jane,

Sam here, Pete's brother :) We are actually thinking of doing something like this in the not too near future.... there have been some other posts requesting this and although we most likely will not add them to the forum (to keep it as fast as possible), adding them to the profile seems to be a good concensus.

We still have some development work to do regarding photo uploads in general (also for the diary for example) but it is very high up on the priority list of things to do.... now if I could only find some time! :)

Thanks for the feedback; it's really nice to hear that the ideas people have are doable and that so many people are interested in 'more or less' the same so that we can help out a lot of people in one go with new features!

Hi Jane and Sam,

Hi Jane and Sam,

I have to say that after looking through the contents of this site, Sam and Pete has done a great job. Just two guys living half way around the world from each other (Norway & Australia ?) trying to put together and maintain a site like this is no easy task, and it's not a paying job either. But, rather, they have to spend money from their own pocket for us to enjoy. Thanks guys!

Enough said about that! Now, please let me put in my 2 cents on this subject. In order for this site to be more attractive, more popular, a bit more spicy we need to add pictures along with words (a picture is worth 1000 words!). However, we all need to know, at the present state, from the technical standpoint, the more pictures we have the slower this site will be. Not only that, to have pictures we need more bandwidth, better server, which means cost more money to rent space, ect. I do appreciate Pete and Sam created this site for us travel lovers with their own time and money and not a dime coming from any commercial source. In order, to keep it commercial free, and better server, ect., us, the members should contribute financially to this. I belong to another site, which people volunteer contribute 5, 10, 25, 50, or whatever amount they want to give. And this site, has a surplus over a thousand dollars right now. I think, each month they pay roughly $35 for server fee (it is in another language though.) Last month I took a trip to San Francisco and post an article with picture in it (the address is below). If you want to see what $35 a month could improve, you can click the address below. I think before we ask for more from Pete and Sam, we need to ask, how we can help!
"Ask not what your site can do for you. Ask what you can do for your site!"

A couple of interesting points there. Photos certainly aren't a bad idea, and could either added to the profiles (either directly, or even as a link from your profile - so still possible to check a profile without having to see the photo/wait for it to load) or on a seperate page/string somewhere for member photo's.

And Pete and Sam - apart from hang around, keep using the site and offering suggestions, is there anything which any of us can do to help??

Iloveflyin and Gelli,

Thanks a lot for your kind words. You have no idea what these things mean sometimes (I read them right after a rather strenuous meeting about a lot of cash for another company I am somewhat involved with)... good timing!

Just to clear up something as I would hate anyone to believe otherwise.... :) As of last April (our first sponsor!) Travellerspoint is generating income both from sponsors and bookings although we have managed to keep it fairly low key so that it isn't noticable all over the place. Coming back to the picture thing, we signed some deals with some GREAT sponsors (these are the sponsored links on the left hand side of every page under the log in/log out area) late last year that allowed us to make the switch to our own server last week. This is somewhat of a longtime dream come true as now we can focus on adding some really cool things that we have been thinking about for a while; like the photo upload possibility (which I think Pete and me have been discussing for a year now!).

The main problem is not letting it spiral out of control picture wise so that there is a good balance between the amount of pictures uploaded and the speed of the site for those travelling and accessing it on low speed internet connections. Unfortunately, pictures really slow down pages

Gelli, things to help out the site from a members point of view? Email a few of your friends and get them to join and tell their friends..... the more the merrier I say!

ps. thanks again for the VERY kind words!

Hi Sam,

The add sure takes a LOW profile, I hardly notice unless looking for them. About posting photos, in other sites, I rent space from other server, so when posting pictures, I do not take any bandwidth from the site. Many sites also request that members limit the number of pictures and the size of the pictures they post.

Yes, we have considered the offsite option but think it would be easiest if everything is on this site with an easy to use upload/download option available. There will be some kind of maximum when it comes to the size of the pics and depending on how it works out the first few months, we can increase that based on membership participation (for example).

Plenty of ideas swirling around.... but for now, I think it's bed time in Norway... fresh start in the morning!

Thanks guys for the very kind notes - it's great having you around!

Regarding the photos, there is one way that I would prefer to implement the travel photography at least - member photos aside.

What I want to create is a 'temporary gallery' where people can upload whatever they like (well maybe a maximum of 20 pics or so). This is attached to their profile and possibly diary entries as well. Basically they would only be left on the site for 2 months. I figure that gives family and friends plenty of time to have a look. However, if the pictures are good enough, they will be included in the permanent photo gallery. Perhaps there will be a panel of judges involved in screening and choosing such pictures.

I'd like your feedback on this, as it would naturally involve a fair bit of work setting up. Certainly though, we won't let the bandwidth issue or space issue stop us anymore - we have multiple gigs of space on our server to use up if necessary! The only consideration is whether it slows down the experience for the end user.

The temporary gallery seems like a good idea to me. Also keeping in mind the size of pictures to submit to the gallery etc. This way friends and family could have a look at the pics say if someone was away for a long time. I guess then any really good pictures could be judged to be kept permanent. However, maybe members could choose one or two photos from the temporary gallery themselves to be put on the permanent gallery i.e. their own personal favourites and point out which ones they would like to keep
