This will be our first trip abroad. I'm going with my husband, both of his sisters and one brother-in-law. We are going the middle of Sept. I've been put on planning/booking assignment, so I need all the help I can get.
We startin Vienna, then Munich and finish in France, Paris and maybe Normandy. So the first thing I need help with is, where to stay in Vienna, not too expensive but no vermin.
Also, we want to stop in Saltzburg on the way to Munich. Would it be a better idea to go there in the evening, stay overnight and have the entire day to sightsee before going to Munich or could we go to Saltzburg in the morning and then go on to Munich in the evening???
Does that give us enough time in Saltzburg. My husband is a pianist so Mozarts House is a must. He may need some time there or anywhere else involving music.
Thanks in advance.
I spent the night in the Vienna airport while I was there since I had to catch any early morning flight to the US so I can't really advise you on accomodation in Vienna. As far as Salzburg goes, please give yourself two nights there. It is not possible to cover everything in a single day. You mentioned that your husband is into music. So am I since I grew up learning classical piano. Here are the things you absolutely HAVE to see while you are in Salzburg.
1) The Festung fortress.
2) Mozart Geburthaus (Mozart's birthplace)
3) Mozart Wohnhaus (Mozart's residence)
4) Mirabel Gardens
5) The Sound of Music Tour (this is an absolute MUST!!! If possible, try and take "Bob tours". Their groups are small and the tour is very personal. This is one of the highlights of a Salzburg trip since the story of the classic "Sound of Music" was based in Salzburg.)
As far as accomodation in Salzburg goes, I would recommend "Haus Lindner" - a bed and breakfast home run by a family. Look them up on google. If you are unable to track them down, send me a personal message and I will try and hunt down their contact information. I hope this helps.
How exciting for you.
I stayed in a hostel in Karlsplatz in Vienna, don't know its name, but this is a really nice area to stay. The Karlsplatz Cathedral is one of my all time favourites & is worth seeing both during the day & when it is lit up at night.
I agree with staying in Salzburg for a couple of nights, it is one of the most enjoyable cities I have been too. Go to the Augustiner Beergarden while your there as well, its fabulous, not just the beer but the locals that you meet & it has a food hall as well.. try the pork hocks The views from the fortress are wonderful.
Good luck with your trip
