Help! I'm travelling with my husband to Spain at the end of October(his first time) and we only have 6 days. Right now we are flying into Madrid and out of Seville. We were planning on spending 2 nights in Madrid, then taking the train to Granada, spending 2 nights there and then onto Seville for 2 nights.
My biggest question is how we should go about taking the train to Granada. Should we opt for the overnight train (I'm not leaning towards that)? Or should we hop a train to Cordoba, spend the day there and then take the AVE to Granada. OR, is the train ride really that long from Madrid to Granada?
Also, I'm wondering if we should stop in other cities (maybe take a side trip down to Nerja or something) or would we feel too rushed?
Any advice would be EXTREMELY helpful (places to stay, eat, etc.). I backpacked through Spain for 3 weeks 20 years ago and fell in love with it. I know things have changed and thankfully I'm on a different budget then I was then!
THANKS IN ADVANCE!
Just one comment: I would go by bus from Madrid to Granada (or viceversa), faster and cheaper, and many services a day (from Alvaro Mendez, Estacion del Sur in Madrid). I have always go by bus.
The train to Granada takes 6 hours, and the bus around 5 or 5 and a half, I am not completely sure.
For train timetables you can check this site www.renfe.es (which is also available in English). There are two daily train to Granada, one leaving at 08h10 from Madrid with arrival at 14h10 and the second one leaving at 16h47, arriving at 22h48.
It depends what your priorities are. Cordoba can be a nice city for a day trip, so if you finally decide to take de AVE to Córdoba (there is no AVE to Granada, the AVE goes from Madrid to Seville, stopping in Córdoba and other station I can't remember de name of), spend there some time, and at the end of the day take another train or bus to Granada, that would be a great option too.
If you are stoping in Córdoba, do not stop anywhere else. I mean, one day Córdoba and one for Granada can be a bit tight, so if you decide to visit something else, it can result a waste of time, to my opinion.
I would focus on the cities, and hopefully next time you will have more time to explore other wonderful things Andalucia and Spain has to offer you!!!!!!!!
do not hesitate to ask more if you need to!!!
Definately 2 nights in Granada, well deserved! Beautiful city and a must for a taste of Spain.
I would recommend the coaching from madrid, cheaper and faster than the train, as aitor suggested.
1. Do not miss the chance of visiting the Alhambra!
2. If you wanna spoil yourself try the Alhambra Palace Hotel, stunning!
3. And for the best dinner-with-view try the "mirador de aixa" restaurant. You won´t regret it!
Any other suggestions, just ask!
Have a great time!!!
If you stay in Granada you can get a bus down to Nerja; takes a couple of hours but goes through lovely scenery. Bus company is Alsina Graells.
