you will be pritty safe with that budget for a while, it depends on how much work you do really, but £1700 won't last you 6 mnths without working

At the current exchange rate £1700 = $4,049.80aus, certainly not enough to stay here in Oz for 6 months and not work. But if your careful and don't splash out a few days of work a week should see you though.

Probably last you 3-4 months if you only buy essentials and don't go on the pi$$ evry night

That's how long it could theoretically last. I'd say no more than 2 and a bit - up to a maximum of 3 - months realistically, particularly due to transport. (You can either buy a cheap(er) pass in advance, but have spent a huge wad of money on it, or pay as you go, but thus spend a lot more.)

Then again, once you reach your last $500, it's amazing how cheaply you can really live and how far you can stretch that... :P

If you want to make the money go a bit further - check out the University student notice boards in each city - renting a room for a month or two will certainly be cheaper than hostels and until the weather fines up a bit (well east coast at least) you probably wouldn't want to camp - not that it's cold... just constantly raining.

Also - sounds silly, but in most of the major cities - the Hare Krishnas have a building in the center of town where they provide a free evening meal. All you have to do in return is listen to a 15-20minute sermon on their religion. But the food is all vegitarian, healthy and rather tasty... hey what traveller on a budget would say no to a free feed??
