For those of you that don't know, Google launched an extremely impressive (free!) feature today. Google Earth is basically software that you download (no Mac version yet though!) and can use to zoom in on addresses, places, buildings etc. It's pretty amazing stuff and includes some neat 3D features, as well as the opportunity to tag places/buildings and then send it off to friends.

Anyway, just thought I'd share what's keeping the blogosphere busy today!

Sadly, I can't get it because I have Windows ME, but if it's anything like the Satelite Maps feature that Google has (and it seems like it is) it's not THAT accurate. My address, along with a few of my friends' addresses are incorrect. When I type it in, it shows my street, but not my house. Tsk tsk Google ;)

it's mostly for the usa market - that's why canadian or other country addresses don't work properly

Still, I find it very impressive. The amount of data that has to go into a system like this is pretty incredible! But I have heard it can be a little off here and there :)

We just tried it here (thanks, Sam!), but once we got below cloud level everything was just a big blurr. Still, I was getting goosebumps as we closed in on the city. Who would've thought 50 years ago that we could have the world at our fingertips? It's like something out of an old sci-fi movie.

Dammit! I am always too late for the latest stuff...like the postcard idea for Sam. This is what the site says right now:

The Earth At Night (Beta Temporarily Closed)

Welcome, frustrated would-be planet surfer.

We appreciate your interest in accessing 3D geospatial information, but due to the technical limitations of this beta launch, Google Earth has been forced to take a brief breather. Please check back with us soon.

Thanks

I will try later...

Typical, I should have known that linking to that page from a popular site like Travellerspoint would have crushed google... probably not able to handle our kind of traffic :) LOL

See, it pays to have a Mac - all the bugs are worked out by the time there's a version for us to use!
