Every now and then I get a request for an interesting new travel related program, show, event or otherwise. Just so earlier this week and thought it would be of interest to quite a few of you so it's copied in full below.

What are your thoughts on this?

THE REAL RACE – Introducing a New Tourism Experience

THE REAL RACEis the most courageous contest ever attempted. It's NOT a TV reality show but a real race, with real people and real challenges. THE REAL RACE is a new tourism experience that will revolutionize the way people choose to spend their holidays. THE REAL RACEoffers an intriguing trip, in a competitive but friendly environment, with plenty of tourism adventures. Best of all, one team will do it all for FREE!

The concept is quite simple; twelve teams will travel around Australia, performing tasks and accumulating points at every ‘rest point’, based on their performances. The participants pay for their trip, and the victorious team wins the cost of their trip back. In this race there are no losers and no eliminations. Every contestant wins, just by being a part of THE REAL RACE. This is purely a different and fun tourism experience, providing a once in a lifetime adventure.

This is the extreme experience for anyone who has the passion to win, possesses the 'travel bug', enjoys being challenged, has good spirit, and is a never give-up person. You will also be a fair player, who is willing to take risks, enjoy the moment and be passionate about new adventures says Amber Newton co- owner and organizer.

The first THE REAL RACE will take place in Australia with dates still to be released. Australia was chosen for being THE best country in the world for travelling. It's a country with snowy mountains, beautiful beaches, the greatest reefs, deserts, rainforests, world heritage parks and so much more.THE REAL RACEteam has traveled the world, and with their experience in adventure tourism they all agree that Australia is the greatest location for the race.

For more information on the race and how you can be part of it you can go to THE REAL RACE web site or send an e-mail to [email protected]

Australia was chosen... by the Australian Tourism Board, no doubt.

My only concern with a trip like this is that you are pretty much locked into an iternary, and because you are racing, you won't have much time to see anything other than the specific, pre-chosen tasks that you have to complete.

That being said, I do like skiing and kayaking and snorkeling...

I would love to do something like this... but after looking at the format, I think it's sadly going to force 'real' travellers out of the game because you have to put up all the money for your team upfront (and by the looks of the webstite this could be as much as $40,000).

  • sigh* Guess this is going to be about the 'haves' and the 'have nots' again...

This real race concept looks very interesting…I’m definitely on the ‘have not’ side but I’m gonna register and see what they come up with…doesn’t cost anything anyway. I also love the amazing race and will seriously consider taking this calculated risk as I’ll do my best to win it and do it for free (get my money back).

Will keep you posted with what they come up with.

Okay, a few days later and I've done some research... Firstly, the above quote is from one of the organizers... never a good thing when they impersonate others and it generally makes you wonder! There seem to have been quite a few posts on other travel forums about this that were rather suspect/or removed as well as some blog entries, again by the organizers appearing as regular travellers. This is at the very least false advertising of some sort.

As of yet, I've been unable to get a clear idea of this being organized by a company that can be checked on and verified. This would make it extremely difficult to get any type of goverment help in case this thing turns out to be a big SCAM. Also keep in mind that the winner doesn't really win anything, they just don't lose the money their trip cost (which might/might not be more than the same trip being done otherwise).

In short, the whole thing is rather vague and I would strongly discourage anyone from actually paying any money to participate in something like this. The first registration is free but I don't know what the steps are after this.

That's just my findings and it might be totally legit, but if so they're going around marketing it totally wrong and there is no way of verifying anything claimed at the moment!
