Two years ago, I spent my Christmas on a sailboat in the Whitsunday Islands which was brilliant. Quite nice for someone traveling alone as well, as you're guaranteed to have a small "family" on Christmas. You may end up hating some of them, and you'll probably be drunk, so it could be just like home (for some).

I then spent New Year's Eve in Airlie Beach which is a resort town that knows quite a bit about partying.

A lot depends on where you are located when the holidays fall, I'd imagine that any of the major cities would be quite fun as well.

John, that would have been so much fun!! The whitsundays are beautiful and airlie is such a fun place. So many people travel to airlie for new years so I think John has the best idea there.

I once spent New Year's Eve at Woodford Folk Festival near Brisbane which was quite different from the usual partying and getting drunk. As far as I know it's held annualy over six days and nights and presents various Australian and international performers with concerts, street theatre, a film festival, or jam and comedy sessions. I also remember an absolut brilliant fire show at midnight. The atmospere and other people were really cool and partying there was totally great. Genreally, I think it doesn't matter were you spend New Year's, in order to have a fab time it's just important to spend it with the right people;).

woodford is great.
It starts on the 27th of december and goes through to the 1st of January.
It is a lot busier than it used to be so they have put a cap on the amount of tickets they are selling this year. It is the first time they have done it.
The website is www.woodfordfolkfestival.com (?.au)
i would def recommend it.... but if you are interested get in soon cause the tickets are selling out.
