Wearing personal jewellery and cultural issues

Travel Forums General Talk Wearing personal jewellery and cultural issues

Hello, I'm new to this site so forgive me if this initially may sound absurd, but I was reading a travel
photography book today, amongst it's chapters was cultural
restrictions.

The question I wish to pose is: I wear an earing (I'm a 40 somthing
male)which is a Celtic Cross, could something like this cause offence
in some cultures?

I know the most obvious answer is remove it if in doubt, but it would
be interesting to know if anyone has an answer or had the experience
of jewellery causing issues whilst travelling.

I don't see how it could.

I appreciated having to respect the customs and cultural restrictions of other countries, but I do think that people can take things to the extreme.

I have travelled in, I think, a wide range of cultures,
I have rarely encountered situations where things of this kind have caused a reaction.

It's more when people directly disrespect or disregard the cultures or religions they're in that trouble can occur, for instance wearing inappropriate clothing in a temple.
