Getting Robbed - Worried :(

Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean Getting Robbed - Worried :(

I recently bought a NEW digi slr camera worth a fair bit - I'm a bit concerned about taking it travelling now. So many people keep posting threads about how dangerous South America is and how likely it is I will get robbed.
I also own a smaller Canon digi worth less would I be better off taking the smaller one instead?
I have bought insurance to cover both cameras.
Anyone have any advice?

Well if they are insured then dont worry about it as much, you can buy good cameras out here maybe for a tiny bit more than insurance covers.

I have been in South am and mexico now for 4 and half months and touch wood, i have not had 1 ounce of trouble, i would be more scared taking it out at home, i feel safer out here than a night on the town. Dont flash it about, and dont put it in your bag, keep it where you can feel it, i do in my zip pocket.
Just beware that pick pockets are good but dont give em the chance for an easy rob...

definately good advice!
the best plan is be careful but not over anxious it will ruin your trip!!

if you think you'd be less anxious with the smaller one take it, at the end of the day, having photos is nice, but doing it and being there is far more important!

I got a Digital SLR and traveling trough SA for a couple of months now. Had no problems and cant say Ive been in a spot yet where I didnt dare to take it out. Note that a big camera will sometimes get you unwanted attention from beggers and such like any sign of whealth will so dont wear it on a strap around your neck. Other than that take it with you and you wont regret it.

Might also be handy to take a small point and shoot camera for night outings and places you dont feel secure about taking out the big one.

Please don't worry so much about being robbed in South America!! Yes there are risks - but not too many!! I recommend being on your guard though - and following common sense at night etc. when you are in unknown areas!! I brought my digi cam to SA and it survived a four month trip so I reckon if you follow all the above advice from everyone you should be fine!!
