Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific OZ first time. Nov 05. Where to Go??

Hello. I'm planning on heading to the east coast of OZ on a working holiday visa right after I turn 18 in Nov. I am planning on going alone, which everyone is calling me a nut for. But I can't wait. My vision is to backpack around living pretty well as cheaply as possible because what I reeally want to do is party. I won't have alot of money to start with (about 3 or 4 grand canadian) so i know working will be pretty imparitive. I am still undecieded on which route I should take. I think Flying into sydney will be best, because from what I have found they have the cheapest international flights. But I don't know whether I should spend the summer down there, and make my way north up to brisbane area? maybe more north? is it definatly worth it? or if I should get a flight from sydney right when I arrive and then work my way back south from where ever I go up north? ps. Love beaches, partyin, and pretty well anything else adventuresome thats not to expensive. Thanks for any/all replys!

hey steve,

a fairly popular route is up the east coast from sydney to cairns in queensland. there's sure to be lots of others doing just what you are doing, which means the partying is sure to be good. as for doing it alone don't worry, you'll meet plenty of friendly travellers and australians

message me if you have any more australia queries and i'll try and help,

cheers,

If you wanted to do the east coast, I would do it Cairns down to Sydney. It is extremely hot & humid in the north around christmas time (low season) and if you are not used to it, then it would be hard. Plus, if you want to party, the high season in the north would be a bit more happening.

In Nov, you are kinda boarder line with the heat issue. However, going into Jan/Feb it gets even more hotter and apparently southern towns are just the right temp for travellers coming from colder climates.

Pary on the east coast - def go to Airlie beach - Whitsundays for lots of party and v.good weather.

also Cairns and Byron are good for partying. if you get to go down to Melbourne its the best city in Oz and always a good vibe, but it best in Feb time weather wise.

have lots of fun.

awesome! thanks for the reply's. everything sounds great. although i was a little confused by breevic responce. wasn't sure if you were suggesting to travel north or to travel south. even though you said to go cairns to sydney, your arguements for it seem to suggest the other way? i may just be missing something. any clearity on this would be really appreciated! thanks alot

Sorry Steve. It doesn't make much sense does it?

Not sure how long you are going to be here for - but if it is for only a couple of months I think that you should fly into cairns and work your way down to sydney, because it gets extremely hot in the north in the early months of the year. So when you get more south, you will have perfect weather for summer.

It also rains a lot in the north over chrissy and in the early months, so there aren't as many touristy people around - so probably less parties.

But if you are going to take your time, the best months of the year for the north are are the cooler/wintery months July-Dec, so I would make it around then to see the north.

Hope this makes more sense, not sure if it does. But I hope it helps.

Hey Steve,

Don{t worry about doing the travelling thing alone... you will definately meet loads of other friedly backpackers along the way who will be travelling much the same route. If you can, try and add Melbourne to your itinerary, it really is a great city, fantastic beaches along the Great Ocean Road and wonderful parties all year round, but particularly beach parties in January....

If you want any other advice or fancy someone to have a drink with in Melbourne, send me a PM.

Cristy.
