Hi, I am just wondering how common and dangerous hitchhiking around OZ is? Is this a reasonable way to get around as a wandering backpacker? (18 year old canadian male.) I havnt found any topics on this so any info would help me. Oh and I'm talking mostly about the East Coast. Thanks alot

hey steve,

i really wouldn't recommend it- much safer to take the bus, and it's not too expensive- look greyhounds up.

there was a thread awhile back on the hitchhiking issue:

Thanks alot. Guess I didn't look hard enough for that thread. But I kinda found out what I was looking for. Which is that hitchhiking is never recomended. But still done, often successfully. I know of all the dangers that come with it, but i think it could add to an adventure trip, especially if your alone. Does anyone know if it's illegal to hithchike in OZ, or just to pick people up? In Canada only the person picking up a hitchhiker is liable.

Hitch-hiking is illegal but still done here, but not safe, especially for a person travelling on their own, male or female. There are some really sick, sadistic people around who prey on young travellers, so take my advice and don't do it! Even if you aren't overly concerned for yourself, have a thought for your loved ones back home, they'd want to think that you were safe.

i hitched all over aussie most people kept telling me that i was lucky that they picked me up,
i think in the 70s there was a freak who murdered alot of backpackers and that still is in most peoples minds
i love hitching and have met some of the best people anywhere doing it and had a few run ins as well
life isnt 100% safe
use your catskills

it wasn't in the 70's - it was in the 90's - he killed like 18 ppl and it took about 7 years to catch him - i lived along the stretch of highway where some of the murders happened - scarey shit! i wouldn't reccomend it, there are a lot of psychos in australia (hey i'm being honest) especially pill poppin truck drivers - who are generally the only ppl who pick up hitchhikers. the bus is really cheap and the driver wont hack u up into little peices

I keep on thinking that hitching in nz is really really good, cheap and safe!!! I did it alone all the time (and I'm a woman) and had no problems at all... Instead, I seemed to meet a whole lot of interesting people and end up in situations I hadn't experienced otherwise. Come on, of course it's not 100% safe but nothing is, ey...?
