be sure to have herbal sauna and Lao massage at the forest temple south of the city centre - 20 min walk. Not the best - but something.

get drunk in the evening - nothing else to do

Hi, I had 23 hours there, stayed in the worst place ever on my travels, I had to coccon myself in my mozzie net cos fleas were everywhere. Anyway, I recommendeaasier a bike taxi for $2 like sensible peopel opted for or like me walk (preferably not in the blistering heat) to the temples, statues, relics ad the amazing museums en route to Pha That Luang which closed for one hour as soon as I arived noon-1pm but this gives you time to rest and see the monks and surrounding temples and statues, fantastic!

Simon

The journey from Luang Prabang to Vientiane was the worst ever, of the 15 people on board 6 vomited and 1 person wet their pants. I was supposed to be on the A/C bus but they put me on the clapped out one.

This response if probably "after the fact" and you are back home. Maybe someone else can use this info.

Uncle Fred's Chicken House - A U.S. expat restaurant. Decent food, helpful information. Drink Lao Beer!

People's Morning Market - Not far from the U.S. Embassy. Pick up a Lao Beer T-shirt.

Chaleunxay Hotel - Between the U.S. Embassy and the People's Market. Decent, fairly new accomodation. Restaurant was okay. Helpful staff. Big TV's.

National Ethnic Cultural Park - Not far from the Friendship Bridge (between Thailand and Laos.) Unusual concrete/statues of Hindu - Buddhist deities. Many odd statues.

Vientiane is worth a day or two to visit.
