I am going to be travelling east coast to west coast in September.

Probably starting in New York and finishing in San Francisco.

Can anyone recommend somewhere we can hire a car from for about a month and a half? We need to be able to pick it up in New York and leave it in San Fran.

Hiring (or renting as they would call it on this side of the Atlantic) a car to pick up on one coast and drop on the other can be pretty pricey - usually they will make you pay a drop-off fee that for a distance like that can add up to 100s of dollars.

Check out this website for tips on "drive aways," which is basically you being "hired" to deliver a car from one part of the country to another. Here's the link.

Thanks for the link, Greg. I've just enquired about getting a 'drive away' for Canada in September.

I used to get paid shifting cars at weekends between depots for Hertz when I lived in Britain - though was rather limited to time and destination - many trips made between Bath and Heathrow. Didn't think about doing something similar in Canada (shame I won't be paid for it;), but I won't complain if it works out).

Thanks for that.

I have been looking at the application form on, the form says that they wont give you a car unless you have a contact telephone number at your destination city, how is any traveller going to have this?

I got in contact with the company and it's not as complicated as their website makes out.

They said I can just turn up with my full driving license and I'll be fine
