Let me first start off by saying i'm not Fluent in spanish, and would be traveling alone. I'd be flying into san juan. It's my summer before my senior year of college and i just lost a friend in a tragic fire and need to get away and chill on a beach for a while. I'd like to keep all the expenses low, but i would still like to travel. Any suggestions would help. I've read some of the previous posts but i'm not sure what their budget, etc. I'd love to meet up with some people. If i do this i'd be there from july 18th through aug 10th.
Thanks again,
Guistino
p.s. I don't know if there is a transit system to get around.

I don't know about prices, but Coast Rica is a small country and easy to travel around.

You could easily take a bus form San Jose to the beach, and get there later the same day.

I'm pretty sure it's the rainy season down there in the Summer. But I think it just rains in spurts and if you live in Miami you should be ok with heat & humidity. The good news is prices should be lower during the rainy season. I was there in Jan. and the weather was very pleasant.

What cities do you suggest? I'd like to be able to surf.
Thanks

I just saw nature stuff when I was there, I never actually got to either coast, although I was very close to the Caribbean when I was at Tortuguero (a rain forest national park). When I arrived in Costa Rica I had just been to Belize and did the beach thing there. So I really can't recommend any beaches.

Hopefully someone else on here has been to some of the Coast Rican beaches.

I spent some time in a place called Jaco ( on the pacific coast). very vibrant place which pretty much caters for surfers. The surf was very good and board hire fairly cheap (also the emergency services were fantastic when I sliced an artery open after coming off my board and needing five stitched! ). There are direct buses there from San Juan's main bus station. Stayed in a really nice and clean room/hut with ensuite bathroom about one minute from the beach and five minutes from the centre of town. The lovely owner also lent me her bike for a few days so I could get around town after having the stitches in my foot.

I stayed in Tamarindo for a few days and tried to learn surfing there. Apart from me being a complete disaster on the board, I had a great time as it's a really nice and relaxed beach town and the surf professionals seemed to be happy with the waves too. You can also easily get there by bus from San José and if I can remember where I stayed I'll let you know.
