I'm assuming a great percentage of travellers on here have property back home?
I'm from the UK and am interested in how other Brits have had their properties managed while they've been away...
Full property lets, multiple occupancies, 6mth and 12mth contracts... how and what have people done???
My boyfriend and I are going travelling and have already started to look into letting our house when we are away. Unless you have a reliable friend to manage the property I would go with an agent to look after the house. The going rate for agents seems to be 10% of the monthly rent plus VAT, you can also specify the type of people you want in the house (ie students or professionals), you can add things to the standard letting contract. The people you get will determine what sort of let it is, if it is students it would be a multiple occupancy let. Standard contract is 6 months, but you can specify 12 months, and you should make sure the rent is paid by direct debit into your bank account, so you can see that it has been paid
The agent we spoke to was really helpful and said they would keep in touch with us by e-mail, inspect the property every 3 months and will either use their own tradesmen to fix problems and send you an electronic bill or they will use the tradesmen you specify.
I would advise that you go and speak to a local agent, discuss what you want to do and see how soon they would be able to find someone to move in and how much rent you would get.

Was it a national agency or just a localised one?
yes, the agent said they were happy to manage the property whatever...it's only a local agent but from what friends have told me other local agents charge similar prices. Ask around all the agents we spoke to were happy to help!
