Travel Forums Asia HOW TO TAKE MY DOSH

Hi, just sat pondering how exactly to take my money with me on my big trip through south east asia. is it best to get us dollar travellers checks? and i fancy taking enough cash to cover me for five days in bangkok... thinking £75? enough or not? after bangkok we are in malaysia for about a month. should be easy enough to use atms there, correct? then in laos, vietnam and cambodia i was planning on a combination of travellers checks and us dollars cash. is that a good plan? what about the local currencies in those countries? do we need kip, dong and whatever it is? and in thailand it should be easy to use atms, change trav checks and money and stuff shouldnt it? its all so confusing this planning stuff!

then we go to india...

any advice would be extremely gratefully recieved!

cheers

joey

atm is sufficient - might cost a little but is safe. Take a few hundred pounds for an emergency.

Hey Joey,
are you going to India?
If you are its good to have a few travellers checks Just in case!! I found mine really useful in the more backward places as an emergency back up when I couldn't get to a bank...just a thought.

Otherwise atms are just the best these days and a credit card is always useful ;)

In laos your best bet is probably to take some cash in thai baht or US Dollars. In most places you can pay in either of these and they will sort out your change in kip. It is definately useful to keep kip on you...

Yep in Laos there's still no ATM's as far as I know.

US Dollar traveller cheques are still a very safe way to go and pretty convenient.

If you take Trav Cheques and a bit of cash then you've always got you credit/debit cards as another backup should you need it.

It's always a good idea to carry some local currency in places like Vietnam, even though Dollars are readily available - For things like buying street food, local transport etc you really don't want to be using dollars.

£75 should just about do you in bangkok for 5 days - depending on where you stay and how good you are at resisting the urge to party the whole time
