So, I am working my butt off to get money to go away before I get dragged kicking and screaming back to uni in late september,

I was thinking about hitching down to the airport and just getting the first cheap plane I can to...well...just about anywhere

anyone done this kind of thing before? any packing tips ;) ?

Hey mim,

haven't really gone travelling on the spur of the moment, but a friend and I once wanted to get away for the weekend, so we packed a few clothes for warm and cold weather, went to the airport on the friday morning and where on the next affordable plane which was to Basel in Switzerland. None of us had been there before and the weekend turned out to be fantastic. Therefore I can only encourage you to be spontaneous!
Go for it girl, before work drives you crazy;)!
I actually thought you like working in the bar or is this another job you're talking about?

Sounds like fun, but traveling without money is not quite as much fun as traveling with money. So I'd say, even though I've often had the same feelings of just wanting to leave and go soemwhere, anywhere on the spur of the moment, a person would be better off follow the plan and working hard, making some money and then taking the trip (with money).

I usually can get through the working hard stage by knowing where I wnat to visit, and then spending time reading, learning about the place, dreaming of being there, & planning the trip.

So hang in there, soon you been traveling around .

By the way Mim,

Where are you planning on going? Is this for the diving trip? Have you decided where to go?

Hey,
I think there was some misunderstanding, I will have money but Im not sure if in advance enough to know If i can afford to book well....in advance, hence the spur of the moment plane idea.

This was the diving trip and if I can get enough money I want to go to Costa Rica still maybe.

who knows?? I just thought it might be fun to not do the planning this time seeing as I never follow my plan anyway...

That idea also appeals to me. Just to see some last minute special and hop on a plane and take an unplanned trip.

I'd love to do the spur of the moment thing, but I think having a pet requires some careful planning ahead, so there goes the spur!

mim, Costa Rica sounds like fun! You should head there!

Yup. Two friends live near Stanstead, and every 2 or 3 weeks they just turn up on a Thursday evening and ask for the cheapest flight anywhere. In 5 years they have only ever been to one place - Dublin - twice. Basically, pack light, but be prepared. If it's only a few days or week, you dont need much anyway. A bikini and basic summer stuff plus hat and gloves take up no space, whilst if you wear a good thick jumper or coat when you go on, it doesn't matter - if you end somewhere hot, just leave it in the hotel etc. And plan layers. They can be worn altogether if really cold, but serperately to giv options if warmer.
